Bulatlat reporter named gold winner in international journalism award
MANILA – Bulatlat reporter and community manager Dominic Gutoman is this year’s recipient of the Gold Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize for his stories on enforced disappearances in the Philippines.
The award is named in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, the Boston Globe bureau chief at the UN, who died while on an assignment in Baghdad in 2003. It is given by the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA).
Gutoman’s winning entries include a feature story about women leading the search for their missing loved ones, and a two-part series on why, despite the Anti-Enforced Disappearance Act, no one has been punished for the crime.
“We dedicate this award to the human rights defenders and families who unrelentingly search for justice. Their courage inspires us to continue human rights journalism,” Gutoman said. “We share this win to the broad people’s movement in the country and around the world demanding justice, accountability, and for the surfacing of all victims of enforced disappearances.”
Desaparecidos, an organization of the families of victims of enforced disappearances, congratulated Gutoman on winning the award.
Desaparecidos extends our heartfelt congratulations to Dominic Gutoman. “Your work honors the struggle of the disappeared and gives strength and inspiration to all of us who persist in letting our voices be heard,” the group said.
The group also thanked Bulatlat “for consistently amplifying the voice of the victims and their families — covering their stories, featuring their struggles, writing about their search for truth, and joining them in their calls for justice.”
