Kai Sotto noncommittal to Gilas Pilipinas following lower back injury

Due to a back injury suffered while playing in the NBA Summer League for the Orlando Magic, Kai Sotto chose not to give his commitment to the Gilas Pilipinas in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

According to ABS-CBN’s TJ Manotoc, the 7-foot-3 center intends to undergo treatment and therapy before finalizing his next move, which includes considering a national team stint.

Sotto’s last game with the Magic on Saturday night (Sunday, Manila time) against the Boston Celtics was abruptly ended when he left the arena with three minutes remaining in the game due to a lower back injury.

The Filipino center ended the game scoreless, failing to convert any of his three attempts. However, he managed to secure two rebounds, block a shot, and commit two turnovers and personal fouls each.

Sotto disclosed to Manotoc that he was already nursing the injury before their game against the Celtics. However, during the game, the condition worsened, forcing him to sit out for the remainder of the match.

With Magic head coach Dylan Murphy choosing to keep big man DJ Wilson on the sidelines for the game, it could have presented an opportunity for Sotto to display his skills.
