MANILA — Youth and media organizations hold a protest action in UP Diliman condemning the August 11 targeted killing of five Al Jazeera employees outside Gaza City’s largest hospital complex.

Those who were killed by the drone strike were two of Al Jazeera’s prominent correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qreiqeh, including cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, and crew driver and cameraman Mohammed Noufal.

Also slain were freelance cameraman Moamen Aliwa and freelance journalist Mohammed al-Khaldi.

Raymund Villanueva, chairperson of Altermidya People’s Network said that the killing of Palestine journalists only proved that Israel’s occupation on the Gaza strip is an action only “demons who brutally kill babies, women, and the elderly” can do.

“The enemies of truth are the enemies of journalists,” said Villanueva, adding that the Israel Defense Force’s (IDF) vilification and terrorist accusations against Anas are similar to what critical Filipino journalists are experiencing in the Philippines.

“The killing of these five journalists only created more heroes and martyrs for the truth,” Villanueva added.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 192 journalists have been killed since the start of the Israeli-Gaza war on October 7, 2023. At least 184 of those journalists were Palestinians killed by Israel. (CAM, RVO)
