Kai Sotto shows drastic improvement from US training, says Norman Black

The moment that Filipino teen prodigy Kai Sotto joined the Gilas Pilipinas pool in their bubble training at Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna, Norman Black knew that the 7-foot-3 beanpole made some huge strides on his game.

The Gilas assistant coach has seen enough from the 18-year old to conclude that his US training did a lot of wonders to him.

“My personal opinion? He’s definitely a lot better than he was a year ago before he left, which tells us that the US training did him a world of good and he only needs to keep doing what he’s doing to get to the NBA,” Black said.

Sotto, who is trying to become the first full-blooded, homegrown Filipino to enter the NBA, suffered a major setback when his camp decided not to rejoin the NBA G-League Ignite Team after leaving the training camp to join the national team in its training.

The Meralco coach was blunt to assess that the 18-year old may not be NBA ready yet, but he is certainly heading to a right direction.

“So let’s all be a little’s more patient,” said Black. “The fact that he’s improved means Kai is on the right track. And his dad is also there to look after him.”

Now that Gilas will be competing for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the national team will be looking forward for Sotto’s services, especially in the frontcourt.
